68,000 youth are at risk in Colorado –
KIDS COUNT
Data Book
Save Our Youth serves 275 youth (ages 11-19), primarily minority youth, which are located in poor urban Denver and Aurora neighborhoods.
Currently 45% are Hispanic, 10% Anglo, 40% African-American, and 5% Asian or Native American.
60% of program youth are in middle school.
More than 90% of the youth in
SOY
come from single parent households.
Youth at risk face the following problems:

Drug and alcohol abuse
Gang involvement
Violence
Broken families
Teen parenting
Youth involved in mentoring programs are:
Less likely to start using drugs and alcohol
Less likely to hit someone
Less likely to skip school
More likely to improve relationships with parents and peers
