Statistics

  • 68,000 youth are at risk in Colorado – KIDS COUNT Data Book
  • Save Our Youth serves 275 youth (ages 11-19), primarily minority youth, which are located in poor urban Denver and Aurora neighborhoods.
  • Currently 45% are Hispanic, 10% Anglo, 40% African-American, and 5% Asian or Native American.
  • 60% of program youth are in middle school.
  • More than 90% of the youth in SOY come from single parent households.
Youth at risk face the following problems:
  • Delinquency
  • School Failure
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Gang involvement
  • Violence
  • Broken families
  • Teen parenting
Youth involved in mentoring programs are:
  • Less likely to start using drugs and alcohol
  • Less likely to hit someone
  • Less likely to skip school
  • More likely to improve relationships with parents and peers
