1-to-1 Mentoring
1-to-1 Mentoring

We address the development of youth in our program primarily through one-to-one mentoring, where they encounter new experiences, acquire essential skills, and develop relationships.

Mentors regularly take advantage of cultural events in the area, and program-wide gatherings, while also enjoying the commonplace experiences of life.

Mentoring Builds Connections

Mentoring helps youth encounter new experiences, acquire essential skills, and develop relationships.

Other Support

Though one-to-one mentoring out in the community is the core of what we do, we offer a variety of other support and events for mentors and their mentees.

Skills 4 Success

The Skills 4 Success plan provides ways for mentors to teach, cultivate, and encourage the use of hard and soft skills throughout middle and high school.

Mentees choose from a list of skills to focus on each year during their annual goal setting (where mentor, mentee, and mentoring specialist all meet to discuss). These skills could include goal setting, time management, initiative, self-advocacy, basic math, and communication skills. For high school juniors and seniors, these skills include college applications, career exploration, and leadership skills to help prepare for a post-secondary transition to college or career.

Mentors are equipped with training and research-based skills sheets to implement during mentoring sessions to cover the chosen skill.

Summer Programming

We are committed to offering enrichment opportunities for mentees during the summer. This summer, Save Our Youth is providing stipends to cover the cost of opportunities in the community. In the future, we may explore offering individualized tracks to help mentees work on hard and soft skills they need to succeed academically and in life.

Scholars

To support our mentees as they pursue post-secondary options, Save Our Youth’s Education Coordinator advises previous mentees who are in a type of post-secondary program, providing year-round support to help students navigate emotional and academic challenges while making sure students are aware of various resources available.

Through this program, Save Our Youth also provides financial scholarships for tuition and books to help bridge some of the financial gaps our mentees face. We aim to provide the needed support and resources for them to complete a post-secondary program.
